Chemical Laboratories

Marshall, Minnesota

Overview

The primary role of the Chemistry Laboratory is to generate high-quality analytical and compositional data and to investigate chemical transformations of agricultural and derived feedstocks, enabling the development of value-added products.

The lab can handle a wide range of material types, including foods and food ingredients, meats, coproducts, biobased chemicals, biomass materials, and renewable fuels

The facility comprises two complementary laboratories:

Analytical Chemistry Laboratory

Focused on characterization and discovery work, this lab houses state-of-the-art analytical facilities.

Preparatory and Synthetic Chemistry Laboratory

This laboratory is used to perform wet chemistry syntheses and small-scale process development.

These two labs enable AURI to execute a wide range of practical analysis and activities across food, feed, fertilizers, biomass, and process development work, such as:

  • Food, feed, and ingredient characterization
  • Biomass, coproduct, and fuel characterization and evaluation
  • Fermentation, anaerobic digestion, feedstock characterization, and process monitoring
  • Extraction, identification, and characterization of plant compounds and specialty ingredients, including cannabinoids, vitamins, flavonoids, glucosinolates, related bioactives, and more
  • Quality, safety, and regulatory support

Taken together, these activities allow the labs to move beyond simple point measurements and provide integrated analytical services for screening new concepts, derisking scale-up, meeting regulatory and labeling requirements, and improving the performance and value of agricultural and biomass-based products.
