Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a clean burning, biodegradable fuel made from a renewable resource—soybean oil.  Research has shown that biodiesel is the most flexible, lowest cost alternative fuel option for diesel fleets.  Biodiesel fuel does not require expensive vehicle modifications or fueling equipment.  B20, a mixture of 20% soy-based diesel and 80% petroleum diesel, has been approved as an alternative fuel for use by federal, state, county and utility company vehicles under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT).

Soybean producers are also charged up about the potential for soy-based diesel fuel additives.  Soybean-based additives provide superior lubricating properties, which are key factors in determining diesel engine wear.  They can help extend engine life in farm machinery, trucks and other diesel equipment.

AURI is actively involved in the research and promotion of biodiesel.  RoseWork includes identifying potential ways to reduce the cost of biodiesel, making it even more attractive to consumers.  AURI staff at the Fats and Oils Laboratory in Marshall provides research and support for biodiesel products and are approved by the National Biodiesel Board for quality assurance testing.

The National Biodiesel Board publishes a monthly newsletter called the Biodiesel Bulletin.
