Timetable for the “equal to” program

1972:
Minnesota state inspection program turned over to the USDA.

MAY 1998:
Minnesota Legislature funds a state inspection program “equal to” strict USDA guidelines.

JULY 1998:
Meat processors begin contacting state ag department about state inspection permits.

SEPTEMBER 1998:
Three inspectors hired to provide technical expertise and begin inspections.

JULY 1999:
Four more inspectors will be hired to inspect facilities.

2000:
Congress expected to pass laws allowing state-inspected facilities to sell product across state borders.
