Nearly every agricultural processor generates waste or coproducts. Creating new uses for these by products can create significant new revenue streams.

Idea to Reality: With the increasing demand for fishmeal in fish feeds causing increases in prices AURI client NutriVance wanted to explore alternative feed ingredients for use in aquaculture feeds to replace fishmeal and reduce the cost of fish production. AURI’s Role: AURI assisted NutriVance in planning and executing feeding trials for this new, innovative […]
Idea to reality: Build a mobile gasifer that can turn agriculture fibers into a charcoal-like residue, called biochar, that can be used for absorbing liquids, improving water quality and soil characteristcs, and creating energy. AURI’s role: AURI gathered data to find out what chemicals and nutrients were in the biochar and tested its absorbency. Further […]

The objective of this study was to determine potential biomass resources within the Midwest for thermal heating applications in order to provide a “snapshot” of the Midwest Biomass Inventory Assessment for presentation at the 2012 Heating the Midwest Conference & Expo and for furthering the vision of the Heating the Midwest Initiative. This was done, […]
In 2011, the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) solicited proposals to develop a Biomass Heating Feasibility Guide “for the replacement of high-cost heating fuels, such as propane and fuel oil, with biomass combustion heating systems.” The contract, awarded to DLF Consulting, resulted in this report, which will assist turkey producers and greenhouse operators in rural […]

News about Coproducts
Earlier this year a new feasibility study, conducted in part by AURI, showed biomass cooling can be a viable option for small-to-medium sized commercial, industrial and residential units. The research results, which are part of the Biomass for Cooling System Technologies: A Feasibility Guide, also identifies innovations that utilize biomass as the essential wellspring of energy for cooling systems.
With record 2016/17 U.S. crop yields projected for several Minnesota grown commodities, the support and expansion of value-added agricultural products within Minnesota and the greater Midwest is of the utmost importance to spur new demand opportunities. To that end, I am working with AURI staff and key partners to build an informational and educational event for Minnesota’s agricultural industry about the latest ideas and opportunities for developing new uses for Minnesota grown crops and agricultural processing byproducts.
